Since many patients have a strong aversion to weekly allergy shots, they are far less likely to complete the three year SCIT (Subcutaneous Immunotherapy) program. In fact, only about 40% complete their immunotherapy when required to visit an allergist once a week for allergy injections.
Conversely, approximately 90% of patients on SLIT (Sublingual Immunotherapy) complete their three year program. Therefore, allergy patients have a much greater likelihood of becoming effectively allergy free in a SLIT program.
Dr. Sutton recommends SLIT to all of his appropriate patients suffering from allergic rhinitis, currently taking OTC antihistamines or Rx antihistamines, or currently considering allergy shots.
What is SLIT (Sublingual Immunotherapy)
Immunotherapy treats the cause of allergies by giving small doses of what a person is allergic to, which increases “immunity” or tolerance to the allergen and reduces the allergic symptoms. Unlike SCIT – Subcutaneous Immunotherapy, which is given as shots, sublingual immunotherapy is given as drops under the tongue.
